How did you get started with bodybuilding?
I used to be an attorney but after suffering postpartum psychosis with my second daughter I was put on multiple medications that caused some pretty extreme weight gain. It took me about two years to pull myself out of the depression and I finally started to heal when I began mother daughter yoga with my eldest daughter Ellen.
From there I started doing pilates and yoga then I moved on to bodypump and became hooked on weights. It took me about 18 months to get ready for my first show.
How do you stay so motivated? What drives you?
I realize that I am a role model for my clients and for my daughters. I use that to drive me to keep bettering myself.

What is your training routine like?
Until recently I have just been doing full body workouts about 3 days a week and have been mainly doing compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, good mornings, heavy rows, pullups, chinups, and a ton of shoulder exercises. I have found that if you are a mesomorph like me, once you build up a significant amount of muscle just keeping your lifts heavy can be enough to hang on to a lot of it.
Now that I have started back into contest prep I’ll be breaking things down into bodyparts a bit more.
If you had to choose only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?
Squats, pullups and barbell complexes. I think the third one is kind of cheating, lol. But I think the other two are compound exercises that hit the most large muscles.

What is your favourite form of cardio?
The kind you don’t do! lol. I am a fan of doing more HIIT than anything else. I’d rather superset or sprint to prevent aerobic adaptation. I also believe that doing more anaerobic conditioning uses more fast twitch muscle fibers which helps maintain muscle mass.
But if I HAD to do cardio it would be on a rower because again, it used both fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers.
What is your diet like?
Right now I am working with a coach who is also an incredible chef, Ruben Sandoval, so my diet is pretty incredible and really diverse. I eat up to 1900 calories on some days and I get to eat things like stuffed cabbage roll casserole, slow cooker chicken tacos, pumpkin lattes and carrot cream cheese bake. I, like my coach, believe that you need to properly fuel your body and not deny it, to keep it chugging along so it seems like I am always stuffing myself with something good.
I eat a lot of healthy fats, tons of protein (of course) and get in more carbs on days when I need them and less on days when I don’t.
What supplements do you use?
I love Humapro as my protein source, I also use ZMA, and calcium. I keep it pretty simple.

What are the highlights of your fitness career?
I have competed in about 10 NPC competitions and have been nationally qualified as a figure competitor. But I’m rather proud of being one of the most inspirational and most followed female profiles on Bodybuillding.com.
It makes me feel good to know that other folks look to me for motivation and inspiration. It is a real honor!
