How did you get started with bodybuilding?
I started going to the gym to lose weight, I was about 20 years old. I had put on a few kilos during the army, I went to the gym and saw some guys training with the weights and was curious so I tried them out, liked it very much and that was it, I was hooked, never stopped since then, I try not to miss a workout, if I do miss one I feel guilty. Been training for over 23 years.
What keeps you motivated?
My desire to achieve my goals that I have set in life. One was to step onto the Mr. O stage, done that one 3 times, I’m very happy with that dream becoming a reality. Another is to place higher than 16th in the Mr. O. If I am privileged to attend once more of course. I am very grateful that I went 3 times! I have a good support team behind me, a wonderful and very knowledgeable trainer, David Balasas which trains with me, I push him and he pushes me to train harder. My sponsor Aleko Siatravani that has helped me for over 10 years. Also my wife Helen, she does everything for me, my meals, bookings, organizing with the IFBB absolutely everything! She makes the decisions with me and David in what to do next and has never stood in my way, she has been beside me.
A woman in this particular sport can either bring you to the top or bring you to the bottom, lucky for me, she has brought me up.
What is your current workout split?
I have kept the same program for years now, it works for me so why change it every so often?
- Monday: Shoulders
- Tuesday: Legs and calves
- Wednesday: Back
- Thursday: Back, legs and calves
- Friday: Chest
- Saturday: Biceps and triceps
- Sunday: Off
If you had to train only 3 bodyparts, what would they be and why?
They would be back, legs and arms, the reason I like these more is because they are my best bodyparts, I like to improve them more. Some people hate doing legs but I don’t, they were big before I even started training, from my job as a stonemason, carrying heavy marble up 2 or 3 flights of stairs is how I made my legs!
What is your favourite form of cardio?
It would have to be the Elliptical cross trainer, could go hours on it!
What is your diet like?
On season it’s plain and simple, chicken, egg whites, potatoes, fish, rice, cucumbers. Off season it’s all of the above as well as what my wife cooks, she cooks light, no heavy sauce because it is heavy on my stomach. I don’t go nuts eating in the off season otherwise it’s too hard of a struggle to get back into form again.
What supplements do you use?
I take protein, glutamine, creatine and if I remember aminos, that’s another thing my wife does, reminds me to take aminos. lol
What are your goals for 2014?
For now I am doing the Arnold Brazil. I had my hernia fixed in December of last year so I had a few weeks off training to heal, that’s why I’m starting later than usual and missed the Arnold Ohio and Australia. That’s all I’ve decided for now.
