When did you find your passion for bodybuilding?

I started bodybuilding when I was 15 years old. I actually was about 102 lbs at the time. I remember clearly seeing Flex and Muscle and Fitness magazines in the grocery store and picked them up and was blown away. I still have all my old bodybuilding magazines today. They inspired me to start and they motivated me for years from 1985 till now really.

Where does your motivation come from?

For me motivation is all about finding your purpose. If you have clear and powerful purpose, then it is easy to be motivated. My motivation today and has always revolved around me wanting to feel good about the way I look. When I was 102 lbs I was at that point in my life where I simply wanted something better for myself.

At least my version of better, and for me that has always been a bigger more powerful physique. So bodybuilding was bound to get me excited, and it did for a lifetime.

What workout routine has worked best for you?

My workout routines consist of a 5 day split and 2 days off a week. This has been the best for me, encouraging recovery and allowing me to be in the gym 5 days a week. But when I am in the gym, I have always moved toward a more instinctive training style. I rarely count sets or reps and I use the exercises that feel the best for me on that particular day.

I generally like higher volume training so I tend to do more than 200 total reps per body part when I am in the gym and some days much more than that. I have been known to do 50+ reps on any given set.

If you had to choose only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

I would choose:

  • Dumbbell side laterals, I love isolating all my muscles when I train, and who can have too big of shoulders?
  • Dumbbell curls, I have always loved working arms but I would always superset this with rope push downs for my triceps. I just have to hit them both at the same time but these I always do together and I consider them one exercise.
  • Squats! While I don’t squat as much today because I am trying to spare my knees because I want fully functioning knees in 20 more years, I have always loved squatting. I love the feeling when my quads get so filled with blood that I can hardly walk right. Awesome!

What is your favourite form of cardio?

That is an easy one! Sex! Yes sex is a great form of cardio! I am no 2 minute wonder so I can easily get a full cardio session in and then some with each intimate encounter. But other than that I love the recumbent bike.

What is your approach to nutrition?

I have been working as a nutritionist and prep coach for over 28 years now and I have many approaches that I use. What I select is always based on feedback that I get from my client’s experience and what I see is going on with their body. But in general I love carb cycling.

However, in the last 5 or so years I have grown more and more in favor of ketogenic diets. While I don’t think they are suitable for everyone, they work well for many.

Which nutritional supplements do you use?

I use a list of things on a regular basis. I have used what I consider a therapeutic dose of some vitamins and supplements for over 25 years. Here is a quick list of what I love and use consistently:

  • Whey isolate (Isotope from Redcon1)
  • Multivitamin
  • Vitamin C (I use a minimum of 3000 mg a day, but up to 6000 mg a day)
  • Halo (Cortisol reducing supplement with highly anabolic qualities from Redcon1)
  • Vitamin E (2000 IUs a day)
  • Ubiquinol
  • Probiotic
  • Zinc (100 mg 2 x a day, men’s health)
  • MCT oil (I use the CapTri from Parrillo Performance)
  • Glucosamine and MSM

What are your best 3 tips you would give to someone who is trying to reach their goal physique?

  1. Decide what YOU want from your physique and never let anyone tell you that what you want is unattainable.
  2. Only entertain those thoughts about your physique that confirm your excitement and that encourage you.
  3. Always be joyful in your process. Joy will move you toward opportunities and success faster than anything else!
