How To Turn Your Backyard Into An Amazing Workout Space

It’s the tail end of the year, and by January, people will certainly be making New Year’s resolutions to be fitter or exercise more in 2018. As of 2016, statistics show that there are 57.25 million gym goers in the United States, and while some may have good intentions at the start of the year, not everyone gets to achieve their fitness goals by the year’s end. A poll revealed that out of 45% of people who make New Year’s resolutions every year, only 8% actually succeed.

Lack of motivation, having no time to exercise, or abhorring gym workouts can be some of the reasons why so many people fail to meet their goals, which is why a workout space in one’s home can be a good solution to address these problems. The backyard is the ideal place to turn into a fitness space as exercising outdoors enables you to breathe in fresh air which is essential to good health. Moreover, having a dedicated workout space in your backyard is a great way to stay fit, save money, and live a healthier lifestyle. Follow these tips to turn your backyard into an awesome and free outdoor gym.

Divide your backyard into zones

Don’t put all of your equipment in one place—consider dividing your backyard into several fitness zones. For instance, your deck can be your cardio area and that’s where you can place a treadmill or an exercise bike. The area beside your outdoor wall or freestanding fountain can be the meditation zone, while another spot can be the free weights section. Deciding on what type of fitness areas you can have depends on the type of exercises that you’ll do while you’re in the backyard, so don’t waste any valuable space creating a fitness zone that you won’t use.

Determine the type of flooring that you’ll need for each zone

The right type of flooring can help you workout efficiently and protect you from injury. For instance, your free weights zone should have some type of protective rubber matting. Dropping weights on a concrete floor can cause your flooring to crack, and there’s also the possibility of slipping or tripping on the floor while carrying weights. The meditation area should be on a smooth surface and have gym mats—or at the very least, a yoga mat for outdoor exercise—for comfort.

Install some speakers

Never underestimate the power of a good playlist as upbeat music can motivate you to workout. Consider installing speakers in your outdoor gym so you can hear the music no matter which fitness zone you’re in. If this isn’t possible, then a Bluetooth speaker can work just as well.

Having an exercise space in your home enables you to get fit without the high price of going to the gym. Follow these tips to create a backyard exercise space and look forward to a healthier and fitter you in 2018.
