Do You Really Need That Gym Membership?

Do You Really Need That Gym Membership?

In the US alone, a whopping 67% of gym members never actually go according to data published by Statistic Brain in 2017. That’s money that goes straight down the drain just because people, for whatever reason, changed their minds after paying the fees.

Now, imagine if you just build a small home gym instead. You essentially only pay once for a lifetime membership that you can use anytime you want without having to go out of the house or wait for the equipment that you want to use to free up. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, right? And all it takes to make it work is a little planning and creativity.

Home gym must-haves

Since you’ll be building your gym at home, you’ll need equipment that will allow you to target all major muscle groups without taking up too much space. This is where multi-gyms or multi-station equipment like power towers come in. Instead of having a separate piece of workout equipment for each muscle group, these all-in-one machines allow you hit pretty much the entire body without having to transfer to another station or pick up a different piece of equipment.

With power towers, for instance, you get to hit your chest, back, biceps, triceps, forearms, abs and obliques without having to sacrifice too much space. Just add a pair of adjustable dumbbells to the mix and you’ve got pretty much everything you need to do a full-body workout.

Choosing exercises

If you’re short on time, then your program should consist mostly of multi-joint exercises like squats, deadlifts, pull ups and push ups because they allow you to hit more muscles in one go than single-joint or isolation movements like bicep curls and tricep extensions. In addition, according to a study published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website, multi-joint exercises cause greater strength gains that their single-joint counterparts.

According to a study published by Michigan State University’s Chloe Updegraff, sufficient macronutrient intake is key to achieving one’s fitness and health goals, so be sure to learn as much as you can about carbohydrates, protein and fats. They are literally the building blocks of the body that you are trying to achieve.

It really doesn’t matter where you work out

At the end of the day, as long as you have access to equipment that lets you work out your whole body like power towers and adjustable dumbbells, do exercises that target all the major muscle groups, and eat a balanced diet, you can work out anywhere you want and still make the same kind of gains you would had you signed up for an actual gym membership.
