If you have watched the DVDs or online videos of professional bodybuilders running through their workouts, you've probably noticed a common theme:
They don't train all that heavy! Often, they'll anticipate the reaction of the film crew with a quick excuse such as "I'm only training light today � normally I go much heavier!" Some professionals are more candid, such as perennial pro bodybuilder Bob Cicherillo, who brags about the terrific gains he has made without the use of heavy compound movements such as the bench press or squats. Some bodybuilders just view these movements as too destructive for the joints of the body, and they train lighter.
Wait a second, doesn't this kind of training logic fly in the face of everything we've ever learned about training? Isn't the use of HEAVY weights required in order to gain muscle? The answer is Yes and No. Training light works � but only if you are able to stimulate an adequate number of muscle fibers. There are two kinds of muscle fibers: Fast and Slow twitch. Keep in mind that training heavy activates your fast-twitch muscle fibers, but doesn't affect the slower-twitch muscle fibers that kick in during repetitions 10 through 20.
So if you've been training heavy for years, you have adequately stimulated your fast-twitch fibers. But you probably have a wealth of slow-twitch fibers which you rarely train. Tossing in 3 to 6 sets of training in the 10 to 20 repetition range for each body part is a good idea.
Once you have mixed up your training, you'll learn about the third leg of the muscle fiber stool - the other third of muscle fibers which cannot be stimulated through conventional training. To access them, you need to find a way to boost your 5-ATP chemical levels, or the fuel that allows your muscles to train. The more 5-ATP you have present in the muscles, the more reps you'll see with more weight, each set!
